Chapter 9

A Safe Explosion?

"Someone's getting nervous," Frank muttered, pocketing the arrow and note. "We must be heading in the right direction. I can't wait to bust them after this stunt!"

He helped his brother to a sitting position. "What happened to you?"

"Someone slugged me on the back of the head. What a monster headache!" Joe said, wincing. He grasped Frank's arm. "The launcher - I had it with me. Is it in there?"

Frank quickly checked the floor of the broom closet. The bag with the launcher was nowhere to be found.

Before they could discuss it, the guard came back with a tall, dark-skinned man with a black leather bag. "Here's the doctor. I'm going to get you some water. Be right back," Frank said, sprinting off to the cafeteria for a cup.

"Let me take a look at that wound," said the doctor.

Joe pulled up his shirt. "I don't think it's serious. Just a scratch that bled a lot," he said.

"You're right," the doctor said after examining the wound. "I'll just wipe the area with iodine to ward off infection. Do you have pain anywhere else?" he asked.

"I'm okay," Joe lied. Actually, his head was pounding, and he knew there was a lump behind his left ear, but he didn't want to get into it with the doctor. Doctors always told you to get plenty of rest - and he didn't have time to rest right now!

"Here you go, Joe." Frank handed him a paper cup of water, which he gulped down gratefully.

"Can you stand?" the doctor asked.

With Frank's help, Joe staggered to his feet.

"I'm just a little shaken up," he murmured as he waited for the walls to stop spinning. "It's pretty cool to see double like this!"

The security guard and the doctor stepped off into the corner, where all the Hardys could hear was the buzz of the guard's radio.

"Now. Who knew you had the launcher with you?" Frank asked quietly.

"No one!" Joe protested. "I couldn't find Yueh to talk to him, so obviously he didn't know. I saw Makowski on my way here, but he wouldn't steal the launcher - I was bringing it to him anyway. And - wait!" He snapped his fingers. "Byron!"

Frank leaned forward. "Byron?"

"Yeah, he seemed really interested in what I had in the bag," Joe said. "I didn't tell him, but maybe he guessed."

"Byron keeps popping up today." Frowning, Frank told Joe about his own encounter with Byron.

"So he's an electronics whiz, eh?" Joe said thoughtfully. "Think he sabotaged Roger?"

"Maybe. And it looks as if we'll have to add him to the list of people who might have shot at Makowski," Frank added. "Though I don't know what his motive could be."

Just then the guard came up to the brothers. "Son, we'll need you to make a statement to the police," she told Joe. "You feel up to it?"

He groaned. "I guess so."

"While you're doing that, I'll catch the rest of the student sabotage meeting." Frank nudged his brother's arm, and, with the guard following, they walked to the TIC office.
